Local products

Santorini is famous for its wonderful local products. The unique characteristics of the volcano soil and the climate help in the creation of tasty vegetables like cherry tomato, white eggplants and capers which are used in all the local recipes.  Meatballs with tomato (well known as tomatokeftedes) is one of the most popular recipes in Santorini. Basically, they are made just like meatballs, only that tomato is used instead of meat.Fava is another popular recipe in Santorini. Local split peas are used and that makes that dish especially tasty.

Santorini is famous for producing some of the finest wines and the reason for that is none other than the volcanic landscape which has created ideal circumstances. Volcanic soil which  is especially rich in lava and pumise,  thick layers or volcanic material all over the ground as well as the dried earth due to rare rainfall help in wine-making. The most popular wines in Santorini are Aidani, Assyrtiko, Athiri, Mandilaria and Liatiko. More than 10 traditional wineries can be found on the island of Santorini, each of them offer all the above wines.
